To memories
Images
Blurred by time and distance
When
Classmates traveled a path together
Brief in the line of time
Scenes of science labs, spacious gyms
Cupped cigarettes hidden from teacher’s eyes, food fights
Revolution, conformity
And high school insecurity
Scenes, some turned translucent
Gone to our memories
They linger on
Appearing when we close our eyes
Classmates filling empty seats
The soldierThe runnerThe singerThe dreamerThe dancerThe one in the back row
The one with the secretThe one who never smiled
The jockThe nerdThe preppyThe jokerThe rebelThe winner
Those who sat next to us, walked next to us, were one of us
Their
Layers of laughter, sounds of sobs, hands held walking down the hall,
Pulses racing at the first kiss
The tastes, scents of Marlboro and Doublemint
We played ball and partied
Gossiped
Talked until sunrise and listened to Led Zepplin, Joni Mitchell, Boston and Abba
Went to church and cried
We cried too often
The images blur, age, browning around the edges
Approaching middle age
But when we close our eyes
30 years is today
As laughter fills the halls
And we gather together
The class of 79.
