Nancy Mounts (NHS Staff) VIEW PROFILE

SIOUX CITY | Nancy B. Mounts, 77, of Sioux City passed away Sunday, April 28, 2013, at a Sioux City care facility.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 4600 Hamilton Blvd., with the Rev. Ryan Dowell Baum officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation with family present will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are with Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Nancy was born April 23, 1936, in Sioux City, the daughter of Francis and Marjorie (Dickinson) Wineinger. Nancy grew up in Sioux City, and attended Washington Elementary School, East Junior High and East High School. She attended Grinnell University, and graduated from Iowa State University.

She married Charles Mounts Aug. 23, 1958, in Sioux City. He died Nov. 7, 2004, in Sioux City.

Nancy began her career as an educator in 1958 at Leeds High School. She then taught at Sloan, Iowa, and Whiting, Iowa. Nancy returned to teaching in Sioux City at Western Iowa Tech Community College, helping to start the Individualized Learning Center. Nancy taught at North High School, and completed her teaching career as the school district's school-to-work coordinator. She retired from the Sioux City Community School District in 2000, and then worked at Morningside College. During retirement, Nancy served on the Sioux City Community School District Board for 11 years, retiring in 2011.

She was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ. She was named Iowa Teacher of the Year in 1992. She received a National Educator Award from the Milken Family Foundation in 1993. She served on the board of directors of the Iowa Department of Public Health, and on the HAWK-I Board. She was a founder of Siouxland Cares about Substance Abuse. She served on the boards of directors for United Way of Siouxland and Crittenton Center. She received the Virgil S. Lagomarcino Award from Iowa State University in 1992, and the Friend of the Foundation Award from the Waitt Family Foundation in 2000.

Nancy loved to spend time with her grandchildren, and travel.

Survivors include three sons, Dennis (Cindy) Wilson of Sioux City, Jeff (Jinda) Mounts of Hanahan, S.C., and Mike (Kim) Mounts of Sioux City; seven grandchildren, Chris and Michael Wilson, Melissa and Wyatt Mounts, and Jukit, Wara and Megan Mounts; a brother, Tom Wineinger of Eau Claire, Wis.; and more than 11,000 students she taught during her career.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Charles.
